Maxed the star wheel tonight on my '94 12V. Little if any smoke. My buddy who helped me said he turned it on a couple other 2nd gens (a '97 for one) and it smoked bigtime. Any suggestions?

just checking, but your sure you turned the star wheel the right way, which would be clockwise tworads the front of the engine? what plate do you have in the motor? where is the plate located, all of these will affect the amount of fuel you get, granted you only have a 160 pump, it still will smoke a bit, nothing like a 180 or 215 will. also if you want more fuel, move the AFC housing full forward as well.

put your AFC all the way forward and see if it smokes, if not remove and pressure AFC with 20#air and the foot should move forward. If foot moves your pressure line from turbo is probably cracked. .

I cranked the starwheel just about all the way in my 175HP truck and I had little to no smoke. AFC housing moved forward all the way gave it a slight puff for a brief second if lugged.

I think the problem here is the automatic combined with a 160 pump, automatics don't let the engine lug they just downshift so boost is there pretty quicky and clears up any smoke that might come out.

Your buddy is just full of crap, the starwheel turned doesn't do a whole lot to a stock engine at all. Possibly to a 215 truck it would smoke a little, but there again it's a 5 speed and can get lugged down a lot more than an auto would.

Mark, I've got a set of 181 DVs I'll sell ya. They have some miles on them, but the truck didn't run any smoother with the new 191s, so they ought to be just fine.

Thanks for the Help!!

So, it sounds like I need a larger fuel pump and/or move the AFC forward to start. Will give it a try this long weekend - and take care of a little rust!

Have to update my pix this weekend... likin' the level kit and Cooper 285s. Startin' to look like a more serious truck... need the smoke and speed to match the look and sound.

The 94 with it's little 160 pump and an automatic can generate plenty of black smoke with just a few extra parts and some adjustments. You might want to check the overflow valve for a start.

Not so. My '95 smoked pretty good when it was stock and I turned the star wheel.

Why post stuff like that?!?

96 auto 180 pump... star wheel and plate adjustment made it smoke. Any time it's below or near 1500 rpm and lockup it will soot pretty nicely. Also any other time no boost is built.

You need to make sure it is adjust correctly for what you want.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will print this out and see what I can do.

Look forward to more speed and smoke. Probably gauges to be safe, too.

Had the same problem with my friends 94 auto. I believe that his AFC diaphragm was bad. We took of the cap on the back of the afc housing off and turned the screw in all of the way, basically eliminating the afc. After that adjustment we did have some smoke.
