So, my friendly SnapOn dealer had a starscan on his truck, which I promptly re-appropriated temporarily for research...

A lot of people wonder what options are modifiable on their vehicles via the Starscan, and what it can actually see. Here's a pretty complete list of things that can be changed on my (early 2007 Ram 3500. )

There are several places where you can edit vehicle options on the truck. They are as follows.

Selecting the Vehicle Prep tab from the HOME screen on the StarScan.

Options are:

1. Reset/initalize computer module (one selection for each computer available on the vehicle. (not really interesting at all)

2. Driver door unlock on first press/all door unlock on first press

3. Automatic door lock at 15mph

4. Automatic door unlock in N/Park

5. Headlights on w/wipers. (only works if you have automatic headlights)

6. Horn chirp on lock

7. Horn chirp duration long/short. Short is default.

8. Country code. Available countries are ROW(rest of world), USA, Europe, Canada, UK, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, GCC, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil and China.

9. Flash markers on lock

10. Accessory time delay. Selectable (10s, 30s, 60s, 5min, 10min)

11. Disable radio clock display. Keeps the frequency displayed on non nav radios.

12. Illuminated entry time. How long headlamps stay on after pressing unlock on the keyfob. Entry in seconds (0-600s)

13. Headlamp shutoff delay. How long headlamps stay on after you shut off the ignition if you have the headlamp switch in the ON position. Entry in seconds (0-600s)

14. Tire size selection. There are a LOT of options here based on actual brand names from pirelli scorpion to goodyear wranglers and the Ameritracs, but I'm going to list just the notable sizes available.

235/80r17, 245/70r17, 265/70r17, 275/70r17, 275/60r20, 285/70r17, 305/40r22 and 225/70r19. 5

15. Combined rear lamps enable/disable. 2007 and up enabled is default due to the dual purpose stop/turn lamp. 2006 and earlier disabled is default. ENABLE if you have a 2006 or earlier and an aftermarket bed which uses a combined Stop/Turn lamp.

16. Add nav radio. Must be enabled if you add the REC/REJ radio to a non nav truck.

17 Program ignition keys.

Next option area is to go back to the HOME screen on the StarScan, then select the ECM VIEW tab. This will bring up a list of computers on the vehicle which are on the CANbus. Most have no options to select. I've only included notable ones. To reach these options select the appropriate computer, and select the MISC OPTIONS button.

PCM.

1. 20% Biodiesel water in fuel kit enable.

2. Check PCM VIN.

3. Reset/view Trip info accumulators.

4. Idle-up feature enable.

5. Reset/view vehicle duty cycle accumulators.

6. Emission rolls test mode enable.

7. Reset ECU

ABS.

1. Initialize ECU

2. Bleed Brakes

3. Reset ECU

TIPMCGW (Totally Integrated Power Module, Central Gateway and Wipers)

1. All options from the VEHICLE PREP tab are available here again.

2. DRL enable/disable

3. Fog lamp output enable/disable.

WCU (wireless security control unit)

1. Reset module

2. Erase ALL KEYS

3. Program keys

4. Program gateway (srt-10 only)

Thats the list. All other computer systems only allow for resetting/initializing the respective module.

Finally, I'm including a list of values that the PCM records for posterity/possible warranty issues if you for you to muse over.

1. Total hours (key on engine running/stopped) (not resettable)

2. Engine running hours (not resettable)

3. Engine stopped hours (not resettable)

4. Fuel used (not resettable)

5. Trip fuel used (resettable)

6. WIF occurrences (not resettable)

7. WIF TOO LONG occurrences (not resettable)

8. Engine Idle hours. (not resettable)

9. Engine hours percentage at various calculated load value bins 0-20%, 20-28%, 28-35%, 36-45%, 46-50%, 51-60%, 61-70%, 71-80%, 81-90%, 91-100% (these are resettable)

10. Trip miles (resettable)

11. Trip hours (resettable)

Well, Thats all thats available in the StarScan. If you have any questions, shoot.

-Dan

all your records for hours and fuel are resetable its just in another menu that you didn't go into

why did the snap-on dealer have a starscan?

Our Snapon man is a customer and a long time friend. He has virtually every factory scantool available for purchase on his truck. Tech2, DRB3, StarScan, StarMobile, Launch scantools as well as the Snapon tools and SPX/OTC tools. His truck is like a toystore for me. Very dangerous. lol!

I didn't realize that the trip resets would reset the master hour/fuel meters as well.

One other thing I did forget to mention, changing the Country Code, will change a LOT of other options. So unless you're moving the truck to another market, dont do it! :D

-Dan

i wouldn't change the country code for nothing, they did that to us at training and it messed with a lot of stuff.

man, i just looked and the star scan is about 4 grand and the drb3 is 6, wish I could get my hands on some cheap scanners.
