I've got a buddy with a VERY late 1997 (7/97) 5 speed 4x4. This truck is gorgeous in white with only 68k on the odo. It's been a little stubborn to start for him a few times recently... other times it's perfectly normal. My guess is the relay for the selanoid plunger doohicky on the AFC housing. If this sounds right to you guys, tell me where to get a new one that's not a million dollar DC part. Brian

Could also be a leaking fuel return line. It doesn't have to leak fuel to suck air and will cause hard starting usually the first start of the day. A bad relay will cause hard starting at all different times. During one of the hard start episodes check if the fuel shut off solenoid is pulling all the way up. If it is the relay Radio Shack has one that will work.
