I've had my '96 for a year and a half and have alot to learn about diesels since this one is my first. I've read a few articles about the starter clicking so I think the problem is my solenoid. The strange thing is that the problem only occurs about once or twice a week. When it does happen I turn the key and hear a distinct click. I can get it to start after about 3 or 4 tries to turn it over. It has been going on for about a month now. I refuse to take it to a mechanic, but I know eventually trying to crank it a few times won't work any more. I would appreciate any input. :)

Couldn't have said it better!!

Don't wait too long to take care of this, instead of the starter not running,, as the problem gets worse,, the starter won't shut off! Even when you take the key out! (If this happens, disconnect the batteries, or after a minute or so,, you could have an electrical fire    Not Good!)

Also, depending on what engine you have. If you ahve the 12 valve motor, it may cause damage to the fule shutdown solenoid. Which will run you a minimum of $275. More at some places.

Contacts are only about $20. I would get it taken care of soon.

Good point, since he does have a 12V.

Same problem...

I had the same thing happen about a week ago and gave LarryB a call. This is a job most anyone can handle and it doesn't take long to do. I did order the kit that comes with the two contacts and the new plunger, I figured while I had it out do it all.

Good luck.

Add my name to the Larry B fan club. I put a set of contacts and plunger in a customers truck, saved him a few hundred dollars. Top quality parts.

It's a good idea to replace the contacts but you could also have a poor connection or a battery getting ready to quit.

Just went through this starter click thing on some friends of mines 97 . They smoke the fuel shutdown solenoid before I could get over to their house to look at the truck . They went to the dealer and got a new fuel shutdown solenoid before I could tell them where to get one cheaper . It only cost them over $ 400. 00 dollars at the dealer

Only the "starter" problems.

24V's do not have a shut down solenoid, but after time they can get a stuck/hung starter, or a starter that won't engage. (worn contacts)
