I pulled my starter off today and was wondering if there is any tricks or advice on installing a new contacts in the starter?

I have done that to my 95 dodge also. I had ordered a set and when I pulled the starter of, was I supprised that it had the same contacts that my old 85 toyato turbo diesel 2lt. I got a bigger set that I all ready installed in the Toyato back then in 88 or 89. Yes they are the same as bigger one I have seen else where. I got the idea many years ago when I pulled off a starter on a JD air compressor.

DO NOT grease the plunger. I use anti-seize on the lugs and bolts that hold on the starter . Install the contacts flat when you tighten up the nuts as I have seen them turn and not be flat or make good contact with the plunger.

As for good insurance I pulled the rest of the starter apart an picked the seals out and speared a little grease, not a lot, and installed the seal back in. I have done that several times in the past and I had good luck as generally the bearing will run dry and fail. Over greasing is not good ... . Just a idea Jim

As near as you can, make sure that both contacts make up at the same time.

When one touches before the other, an arc is drawn and that is what eventually causes them to fail.

Starter Contacts

I got the starter pulled off yesterday and installed the new starter contacts and plunger from Larry B, and the new contacts are twice as big as the original ones. One of the original contact was almost gone, so it was time to change them out. Now all is well!!! Oo.
