Starter does not disengage

I start my truck this morning and the starter would not disengage, I turn the key off and it kept trying to start. I left the clutch out a couple of time and then it disengaged any help on why it started to do this

You need new contacts inside the starter and maybe a plunger. It's pretty easy to do or a rebuild shop can do it for you. Either way is better than a new starter.



Do a search, I think somebody on here is selling them.

In the mean time

You can take the starter off and clean up what's left of the contacts. Disconnect the batterys, disconnect the wires from the starter and remove the 3 bolts that attach it to the truck.



Remove the fasteners that cap the end of the solenoid and you will see the problem. You can flip the disc and clean up the contacts with a file. Don't take too much off. This will get you through until the parts show up (or longer).

Is there any sign of fluid (as in diesel fuel) leaking on starter?



Your battery side contact is starting to wear out ( thin/shorter) apparently causing the plunger to go sideways down the tunnel.



The plunger/washer and solenoid (side) contact should be still good but you should replace ther battery (side) contact soon.

As I was told this type of starter probably will never wear out but contact on the battery side will need replacing.



Auto electric shop (starter/alternator/generrator shop mite sell you a contact or two or you can order some from Diesel Electric out AZ. Do search on the name should come up with a few post for phone number.

http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge has the best deal going on extra heavy duty contacts. DIY replacement is a snap. Until you take care of it best to carry a wrench to disconnect your batteries if it should stick. If the starter overheats you'll need much more than contacts.
