2001 auto trans. starter engages when shifting to or from park and once from neutral. replaced neutral safety switch same deal. pulled relay and checked ground in tipm which lit test light slightly... key on trans in park. also... when putting relay back in tipm engages starter for split second also. kind of at a loss here any suggestions would be helpful.
No TIPM in 2001 but I know what you mean. I think it was called the power distribution center (PDC) in 2001. The TIPM is totally electronic with no fuses or relays.
In any case I would guess an exposed or pinched wire in the steering column. That's where the starter signal wire and shifter come together.
Was thinkin the same and tore that apart and visually dont see anything... . very intermittent except when installing the relay back into the pdc, momentarily engages every time...
The Symptoms point to bad ignition switch since you already checked the wiring. The starter relay needs two inputs a gound and power to activate it.
On 12 vavle engines the power comes the from the igniton switch and ground comes for the neutral safety switch. They switched somethings around in the 24 valve engines so I don' know which one is which.
Try switching a relay with the starter relay and see if canks the the starter to rule out the starter relay being bad.
To test the igniton switch turn the key to "run" and put a test lite or voltage meter/multi-tester on the "start" connector pin see if light up you also wiggle the key to see if it lights up. If it still works like a 12 valve.
