Okay folks, my starter just started acting up as every once in awhile it would just click and then start.

Tonight it clicked, clicked, clicked and then started but I heard a noise and then realize that the starter was still engaged so I assume the bendix hung up.

Is this a contacts issue or is it a bendix issue? Help

Thanks so much... ... ..... John

Be prepared to replace your starter in the near future... The problem will be resolved after installing the kit but the windings will be next. Just speaking from my experience with my 99. I did get about 1 year though.....

I've put in several sets of contacts, and two out of, maybe 100 to 200, I really don't keep up, have run several years. Of those two, one lost the bearing/bushings, and the other was the windings. I'm sure I don't see all of them again, but I know my regular customers, plus my own trucks, and replacing the contacts is usually the best fix. I've had several I've put two sets of contacts in, including my '97 and '92, and they're still running... ... well, I guess they're not, the '92 quit a few weeks ago, and I haven't had time to pull it apart to see if it's the contacts or what..... Larry B's/Foster Trucks has the thickest, widest, best priced contacts I've found, so guess who I use, too! And they're always super nice on the phone, and willing to help.

Wow! My post wasn't a dig at Larry B's contacts. Those things are huge & I replaced the bendix with his kit too. But as I stated in my post, " Just speaking from my experience with my 99". I guess I should have stated... . YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY.

Hey, my post wasn't a "dig" on you, either! I was just stating MY experience. I hope, for Jrork's sake, the starter lasts a lot longer than yours did, and I was, in a sense, stating that "results may vary. " And, if you note my post, I have seen one that did lose contact in the windings. I feel for you that you had that happen to you, as I know they aren't cheap!!:{ But... . In "my opinion," I don't think he'll need a new starter in another year or so..... let's hope for his sake he doesn't, and none of us do!! ;)

I have about 45k on my truck since doing the contact/plugger no problems.

Thanks everyone. The contacts and new plunger fixed me up. It was a bit of a PITA when it should have been a super simple project but all in all, now that I know where the top bolt is and how to find it, and the stupid cap over the cable is gone, I bet I could do it in an hour easy.

If I only get a year out of this, so be it. $30 bucks well spent and I'm back on the road.

Take care and thanks again... ..... john

The top bolt is not an issue if you use a ratchet with an extension with a swivel adapter on the socket. Now you know for next time. As for results may vary, I too put in the Larry B's contacts and then a couple of years later just went ahead and had the starter rebuilt when it failed the next time. I figured with the mileage and age on my truck at the time, it was money well spent.

Good your back on the road, I did the same procedure over four years ago and she still starts like new. It's a long term fix!
