I have had an intermiten starter problem over the last week. It won't engage the starter. It seemed that it engaged if you jammed it a little harder into park, so I thought it was the neutral saftey switch. It was so bad Sat. that I had to do something, so I changed the switch. It still did not start. The relay was clicking so It was not that. As a last resort, I rapped on the solenoid with hammer and kicked off. It has started for the last two days. I realized that I am on borrowed time until it quits completely. I hate to buy a new starter if the sol is only bad. Can you buy just the sol or is there a good place to buy a starter outright and fix mine for a back up. I am going to have two CTD on the road and would not mined having a spare.

Mark,
It sounds like the starter contacts have burned out in the starter. Remove the starter and take off the solenoid cover. Once you pull the plunger out of the way you will probably find that there is a step burned into the two L-shaped contacts that the plunger comes down on. Remove these and take them to your local starter and altenator shop so the can macth them up. They normally run $30-$40 for the set. Also clean up and check the plunger, if it is severely pitted or worn at an angle replace it. Heck of a lot cheaper than a $240 starter, especially as the rest of the starter never seems to fail.
Good luck.

I think the best thing for you to do is take the whole works off and have it rebuilt at a reputible starter shop. This similar thing happened to the '95 dually i used to drive at my last job i took off the starter which is pretty easy on our trucks and had the whole thing rebuilt. i think the cost was about $65. 00 for the rebuild at the shop. put it back together and it ran like a champ. Beware of these auto parts store rebuilt starters/alternators a lot of times they just replace the minimum parts and the thing just goes out again.

Regards
Steve
