Anyone ever have their starter just blow apart?

Wow, that truck doesn't look that old at all...what year and how many miles on it??

Looking at the photo, It seems as if the back edge of the break MIGHT have some sort of signs of melting?? And it looks to be very close to the copper windings...if that is true (cannot tell from pic, but maybe YOU can look closer) then I am wondering if there was a loose connection or part INSIDE the starter that caused electrical arcing to the case that led to catastrophic failure. Just a guess here.

Nope. Not ever- unless it’s a GM 6.2, and then it just breaks the web of the block. But anyways, do you have another engine problem, like a hung injector?

It’s a 2018 with less than 30,000 miles on it. I looks like it twisted, it’s cracked at the transmission and the block. I’m afraid to take it to take it to the dealer because I just recently put an MM3 tuner in.

Ben,

Unless you want to pay for it, take it to the dealer and just tell them what happened. Starter failure shouldn't be related to the tuner being installed. Everyone does better being honest. I have always been honest on the four trucks I've owned with my dealer and it has always turned out right. Just had my Ram 5500 at the dealer for backup camera and it still had the performance module connected.

Let us know what you do how it turns out.

Cheers, Ron

You say cracked at the trans and block. Is the block cracked? Is that where the oil is coming from? If so you need competent help. The dealer will find the mm footprint first thing. For the kind of money FCA gets for a motor I’d be looking for a reputable independent garage. That is, if the block is in fact cracked. If not you still need to find the oil leak.

I would not have expected that much oil from a starter... are you sure something else didn't break first and take out the starter?

What were you doing when that happened?

There was no high pitched whirring sound when the starter came apart? We’re you starting the truck or was the engine running?
