Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Starter Problems

Ok the new starter just goes weee until you rock the truck and then it will start. Brand New starter. The flywheel looks fine, but the gear on the starter is showing a little wear on it like it ir hitting something. What could this be the old starter didnt have shims in it and the new one didnt come with it what gives? Thanks for the help Travis

Does the noise sound like the starter is turning but not making contact? If that's the case I would check to make sure the gear is not sticking back in it's retracted position. When you say rocking the truck I wonder if you are jostling the starter loose so it'll let the gear pop into place. Just something to check for. Pull the starter and hook it to power to see if the gear is moving into position.

I haven't had this problem on my truck , however have run into this on some boat engines. Usually there's some corrosion that's preventing the starter gear from advancing into the start position. A little oil along with some motivation of the gear with a prying screwdriver solves it. You'll have to remove the starter.
