if my starter shaft extends out when I put a jumper to it but does not spin is that a solenoid problem or a "buy a new starter problem"??

thanks

Sounds like to me that the juice is not getting to the motor or the brushes are bad or maybe something else. Check to make sure voltage is getting to the terminal opposite the battery terminal on the back of the solenoid and then on into the starter motor (might have worn or dirty contacts). If it's getting through the solenoid and to the stater then check to see that the brushes are ok. If all that checks out then I would think the thing must be burned out. Hope this helps.

Bud,

If you take the three screws off the back of the solenoid you can get at the contacts. Take a look at them. One of them may be burnt off. Easy fix. Get replacement contacts and the solenoid plunger from Larryb.

Most likely the contacts.

Sounds like The plunger is pulling in OK but the contacts are not passing the power on to the motor to make it spin. Try jumping the power to the wire/tab that goes from the solenoid to the motor. That should make the motor spin but the gear won't pop out.
