Twice this week my truck wouldn't turnover. Had it towed to the shop. They put in a new starter.

I was wondering if 7 years is too early for a starter to go bad?

Same thing happened to my brothers 96' 3500. After a couple of weeks of starting and not starting, he decided to pull the starter and have it rebuilt. The shop rebuilt it while he was waiting... . a whole 20 minutes.

I am trying to remember what he paid but it wasn't over $25.

He has 155k on his truck!

Call Diesel Electric in Casa Grande, AZ ( no toll free number)

And order you a starter contact replacement kit for less than 50 this will solve many problems. Likely the starter soleniod contacts are worn and the current won't go thru to engage the soleniod and thus the starter.

Sometimes after replacing the contacts a tired starter (one that had other internal probs. ) will fry a short time later.

Replace the contacts and then at least haul to to auto zone, read your parts store that tests starters and altenators for add'l bad components etc.

DC usually gets 350 - 400 for a reman starter.

Diesel electric sells new ones for 350.

On the mileage question, most trucks may act up at 100k or so depending on how much you start and stop.

I changed one on a contractors truck recently at about 70k, lots of short trips etc. .

Good luck

sounds like you might have spent alot more money than you needed to. contacts cost 3 bucks a piece. i replaced mine somewhere around the 160k range also.

Mine went out after only 3 years. around 250K miles though. The starter went right before my batteries. I'm guessing probably as a result of my batteries going bad and sending more amps through my starter.

Well it starts.

It was about 10 degrees when I picked up my truck today. The new starter worked great. Ya Its gonna cost me. But if you buy a starter from him its gaurenteed for life. :)
