Have noticed occasional whine after starting my 97. It only happens once a week at the most. First blush, I am thinking it is a bendix hanging up. I have had one problem a month ago where it would not shut down. After reading the site, it seems like it might be starter contacts. If this is the way to go, do I pull starter to replace contacts? Not a great mechanic but I like to do my own work, not much free time. Can it be done in a day? Comments? Stock 106,000 miles.

thanks for all the help

Your problem does sound like it is caused by the contacts.

The starter is easy to remove and re-install. (probably about 30 minutes total)

You will need 10 mm 12 point wrenches for the mounting bolts, one of them will requre a socket and extension. The other two can be removed with a box end wrench.

I don't remember the size of the wrenches needed for the electrical connections but they are common.

Don't forget to disconnect the batteries first.

I have not had to replace the contacts on mine yet and am not sure where you might find a kit for it.

Probably at any good auto/electric supply.

I know they are available for probably around $30.

I don't think the dealers will offer you any advice except to replace the entire starter for a whole bunch of $.

If you have the kit on hand, I would think you could easily do the entire job in one day.

Hope this helps.

The starter contacts are a know problem area so I take the starter off once in a while just to check them. It's pretty easy to remove and replace. Two wires and three screws.

RJ2,

If you take the three screws off the back of the solenoid and open it up you will see that it's a no brainer.

The contact part numbers were posted on another starter thread but I don't have them handy. Just locate a starter shop, pull the starter and contacts and match them up. Cost about $10 up. Contacts will vary so you want an exact match. Real easy job once you go through it. Hardest part is figuring out how to get your wrenches on the starter. Just take your time when you dissemble it on a bench. There is nothing in the factory manual by the way.

Here's another option from a previous thread.

Diesel Electric Service Co. , Inc. Casa Grande, AZ (800) 836-8231 or (520) 836-8231. Cost for the kit was $26. 33 + 8. 50 S&H
