Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Losing Power

Does anyone have any advise about starting a CTD that has been setting for 30+ days? I am pretty sure I put power service in before it was parked. But I am not positive. TIA.

I let mine sit for 10 months outside at a storage lot (including through an east coast winter). No prep - just locked it up.

When I returned it was about 60 degrees outside temp. Pushed on the popper and heard a click from the door locks- good sign!

Turned the key on, paused 2 seconds, said a prayer, and bumped the starter. Fired up like it was ran the day before - not even one extra crank over!

You should be fine.

Just a little safe procedure that I practice...

Pop the PDC cover and pull the fuel system relay. That kills the power to the VP. (You will turn on your check engine light, but it will go away in a couple starts. )

I then crank her for 20-second intervals. (Maybe about 4 sets?)

That will prime the oil pump and send lube all through the motor without allowing it to start.

I also do this after turbo changes to fill the turbo cartridges.

Anal, yes. But safe very.

Cranking too long is very hard on the starter. On the other hand, I have torn down engines that had sat fro a couple of years and found the bearing journals were still filled with oil. bottom line is I would just start it and drive away.

Sitting for 30 days or so really doesn't qualify as "extended" storage, especially with a diesel, where fuel is far more stable than gasoline...

Jump in that sucker, fire it up, let her idle a few minutes, and then get rolling!
