Obviously this won't apply to those with automatic transmissions.

But, assuming one has bypassed the neutral safety switch and is parked at the top of a hill... is it possible to start a 24V like I did with my ol' 69 VW?

I am curious in the event my starter ever goes south.

I'd think you can do it.

But you'll either need to get going fast and pop it in 3rd gear, or drop it in to 4wd.

I think with just the rear wheels, you lose traction in 1st (for sure) and possibly 2nd if you tried a push start.

Remember-- 17:1 compression (for HOs, anyway)

No need to do anything with the neutral safety switch, it's only for making the starter go roundy roundy and has nothing to do with the truck being able to fire.

Yup, I tried it for fun the other day and in 4th it fired up in a heartbeat! I chose 4th to make sure the back tires didn't lock up because I was on a dirt road.

We did that with my friends HO. Here's a good story, at the time I did'nt have a CTD so he moved my hotrod project for me as a favor. That same night he calls me at around 10 pm. I answer the phone to find out he ran his truck out of fuel about 25 minutes from my house. Being the good friend I am, and also him reminding me, he had done me a favor that same day, I jumped in my '65 mustang and headed out to help him. I showed up and we dumped the diesel in the tank and he started cycling the lift pump. After 20 or so minutes of this and the truck not even making a sign of starting he gets the bright plan of pull starting his dodge with my mustang. I hooked up the chain around the rear shackle (because there is no other place to hook it) and started pulling him, (FYI, I told him to take it easy, when he let the clutch out) Next thing I know, he drops the clutch in third gear and the truck came to life but it like to rip the rear end right out of my mustang. Needless to say, I had to get a new set of shackles when I got home.

Thanks to a freak battery failure, I was left stranded on a slight incline. The only way that I could go was backwards. With my brother grunting away pushing on the front bumper, I was able to bump start it in reverse. I'm sure that the engine being warm, helped.

If anybody cares it will only work on a 12 valve if you turn the key on and pop the hood and pull the shutoff solenoid up. The truck pulls it up when you engage the starter so if you never do so... it never gets fuel. I've not yet tried it on my 03.
