Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Starting Problem

I'm writing this as I am traveling and I hope someone can help me. My problem just started about a week ago and happens only sparodically. Problem: I turn the key and when the light and buzzer goes off I turn the key and the engine starts. Lately, when I turn the key I hear a thump and the engine does not turn over - nothing. I wait a couple of seconds and try again and the engine starts. I'm not sure what is causing this. I'm afraid I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere one day.



Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the starter and your starter contacts for anything abnormal. Check the batteries, too. I had a battery go out on me a while back and it caused the starter to do many weird things.

It sounds like you need some new starter contacts.

Probably the contacts, if the batteries are good and the connections are good. Very simple job. Just need some basic tools to do it. Even with having 4x4, you won't need to remove the front driveshaft. It will slip past it. Bit awkward, but not bad.
