'95 5-speed with 95k miles.

This morning (35F) truck started w/o any problem, BUT it had trouble going. It kind of sputtered and it wanted to stop if you tried to give it too much fuel. It also seems noisier than normal, kind of a "thock-thock-thock" sound. This went on for a few miles, kind of had to feather the fuel, until it heated up. Then it ran fine into work, cruised along at 65-70 mph. At lunch (65F), went to run an errand and it did the same thing, but for a much shorter time.

Could it be the air pre-heater? I would have thought that at 65F, the pre-heater wouldn't be much needed, if at all. Anybody been here before?

Sounds like my 94 with 134000 miles. I had sputtering cold running and white haze exhaust all winter, but good running when warm.

I changed the lift pump because of a leaking primer button and now it runs great!!

Check your fuel pressure first, you don't want to throw parts at it, it cost me $150 at NAPA wholesale.

mine does the same thing and has since i got it timed. i need to recheck the timing but haven't do so yet. it does take awhile when cool out but since i live in s. fla it usually pretty warm. so it does take long to clear out. what is the best way to check fuel psi on a 97? i would hate to have to but a lift pump it i don't have to.

I had the same problem with my 97 CTD. It would sputter and sometimes even die until it warmed up and then it just stopped running all together. Replaced the lift pump and has been running great ever since.
