I have a '95 that has been running great till about a week ago. The first start of the day makes a BIG cloud of gray/white smoke and runs REAL rough for 2-3 minutes. After that she starts fine. I was thinking leaky injector (into cyl). Ruled out grid heaters, weather has been warm anyway, but I tested the intake temp sensor. Also drained the filter a bit, no water. I'm running out of ideas. She has 154,000 miles on her.

Mike, mine does the same thing if I don't cycle the heater anytime under 50°, it still starts easily without the heater though even in the 20°s. The smoke gets worse as it gets colder without the heat.

Bill, I found the overflow valve spring broken, stretched it a bit and ordered one. Would this cause it to run crappy for a bit after starting like a missing gasser? I guess this check-valve is to maintain prime. Its been in the low 60s in the morning (5 am) here.

On the drill jig project, can't seem to find a gearcase. I found 4 complete engines but no case, I even offered to buy one thats broke!

Mike, the durn overflow valve does a lot of funny things, it probably is your problem if your temps are in the 60s. I just ordered one on Friday also, $82 from Cummins. See if it will solve my mystery problems. It's funny, called the closest Dodge dealer on the overflow valve, he said I had to buy the entire injection pump, called Cummins NW and the parts guy had the pn in his head and was going to UPS it right after he got off the phone.

We need that jig, I'll see if I can find anything around here.

That is funny. Dealers #ad
Lynnwood Dodge told me today that an overflow valve was $85 and could have it tomorrow. Hence my post. I thought $85 was a little steep. All because of a $. 50 spring. If $81 from Cummins is the best we have, then I am gonna call Dodge and go that way.

Yeah Sly, Its a calibrated item... notice the shim, mine had one, so they gotcha by the "short hairs". It nice that they last a LLLOOONNNGGG time otherwise I would be PI$$ED.
