I changed my fuel filter last Saturday for the first time. Before it always started instantly with no stumbling. Even after 100 miles it cranks longer when cold and stumbles for 1-2 seconds after starting.

Sounds like you have an air leak in the fuel system or low fuel psi.

Yes, re-ck. for one gasket on the stud that the filter threads on to. Make sure the new oring was lubed on the outer edge (like an oil filter gasket) and the wif indicator's snug with a fresh o-ring.

You've likely read about the fuel return line, it runs from the overflow valve under the intake and down to the bell housing.

You might see a severly cracked hose, or a hose damp with diesel. If so find a 2' length of 5/16 30R7 rated fuel line and replace it.

Its easier with the fuel filter removed and the starter removed.

On your post about the 1/4 throttle.

Have an asst move the throttle while you observe, are the ball studs/links worn or sticking, does the throttle fully open?

If you touch the starter without starting the engine and leaving the key in the run position? Does the shut of solenoid full up fully?

Good luck

Andy

Do Cummins new fuel filters come with a new O-ring?

Got a new one I need to put in, and wondering if it comes with a new ring? Maybe that's part of my starting prob?

My wix filter did... ...

If we're talking about the quarter sized o-ring that goes on the shaft inside the filter-- not replacing it won't cause any starting problems but could allow a path for dirty fuel to the clean side.

Think this o-ring is only used on pre '97 filters. Every filter, Wix, Napa or Fleetguard I've used has come with this o-ring and the larger one for the WIF bowl.

The quarter size o-ring will cause hard starting problems & will sometimes leak fuel out the top of the stud, depending on how tight you get the nut. Yes the new mopar fuel filter comes with a new o-ring, didn't for a while but does now. If it started after you installed the new fuel filter than you probably just need to play with the filter housing to get it to seal (check the gaskets turn it back & forth while tightening the nut ect,).

Pweber:

Pls inform us to the model year of your truck. You can add a "footer" about yourself or your truck if you go to the "profile" for your account (TDR). Other more computer literate than I can better advise.

The 89-93 use a small spin on fuel filter, the 94-96 typically use a spin on filter. The 97-99's use a drop in element. Then for 2000-2002 a different drop in element. I'm betting on another change fo rthe 2003 too.

Cummins and Dodge was shorting everyone the gasket, Zjones mentions. (drop in element).

I was referring to the earlier style spin on.

Maybe we are right.

I fixed it by taking the filter off and installing the new quarter sized O ring that came with the filter. I had looked at the old one that stayed on the shaft and left it because it looked good. It was not easy to get off until I figured out the threaded shaft had an allen driver hole in it to remove the shaft. The new O ring fixed it.
