I had a Toyota with a gutted emissions system that I traded in for a new rig. After everything was signed and done I drove the new rig home and received a call from an irate salesman asking why I didn't tell him the system had been removed. I just said, "you didn't ask". He said they lost a lot of money on my deal and that my trade in would have to be junked. It's nice to win with those guys once in awhile, they should have looked. As it was I could have pushed the trade-in onto the lot with no engine at all, they looked only at the blue book, looked at the car from a distance.

I picked up a 1979 Triumph Spitfire from my sons house about two years ago. It was DOA and had been messed with by every so-called mech on the west coast. It hadn't run in five years. Anyway, got it running after finding ignition, carb, and a few other things had peices missing. The smog devices were all frozen or missing off the car when I got it. But,not living where testing is required,I just dumped the pump(new one unavailable) in the trash and went to work. After two years of working on this car and 2800. 00 I had it running, and looking good (no visable emissions). Good enough for the neighbors daughter to want to buy it. I told her I had to get what I had in it and she agreed to a price.

She asked me about emissions and I told her"that may be a problem". I also told her to register it down here(not in Calif Springs). No she wouldn't do it and drove it to Springs. The next day her husband called and told me it wouldn't pass and the emissions guy said "it would cost over 2000. 00 to pass". I wanted to call this guy and bet him that I could get it within emission standards for 200. 00. But, kept my mouth shut and took the car back. Logged on and found the emission laws for Colo. What a joke! It reads that if any part of the original equipment is missing you fail!If you spend 450. 00 and reduce emissions, then you can pass!Every year has a different cost limit on it. I have come to the relization that these laws are made for new car dealers and money grubbing service stations in the Denver,Calif Springs area!People don't want to mess with it and just buy a new car every four years. (limit for new car test).

If they ever try to get it for rest of the state,I will move!It has nothing to do with reducing emissions and protecting our enviroment,JUST MONEY!This car would have been driven only on Sundays and at most 100-200 per month(in the summer). NO common sense.

I had a 78 Spitfire. Those are some great little cars for cruisin. I wouldn't depend on one for a daily driver though. That one looks real nice. Same color as the one I had too. Brings back some high school memories.

Also, if you get the rear spring re-arched the rear tires won't lean inwards. I did about 6 rear spring jobs when I lived in Houston. Everyone who saw mine sittin straight wanted it done on their car too. Cost a little over $100 to do it.

CF,
Same rules here in CA - I think CO copies us. I've never understood the logic of having a cap on emissions repairs - it either works & gets registered or it doesn't work and you can't legally drive the car.

Only a few more years till my Jeep is exempt #ad

What annoys me the worst about it,is that even if you can bring the cars down to 0% emissions,it still fails if you are missing oringinal equipment!Thats stupid.

I have a 90 cherokee that failed emissions. I changed the title to my parents address who live 5 miles east in another po-dunk area... . no emissions. Payed flat fee for tabs and grove away.

Just a few days ago the Okla. Legislature passed a bill revoking the vehicle inspection law in Okla. The Governor says he's going to sign it and it should be in effect in Aug. Therefore, effective Aug. , there will not be any more yearly trips to the guy that merely glances at the tires, checks to make sure the lights work, honks the horn and then puts a sticker on and charges you $6. 00. Additionally, you had to show proof of insurance, but the scumbags with the junker cars merely obtained liability insurance on a monthly basis and let it drop after a month so they could get the sticker. The whole inspection program was a flop so they are scrapping it. The State got $1. 00 from the inspection fees, so they are adding $1. 00 to the price of a car tag to offset the loss. In all the years of having vehicles inspected, I have never had anyone look under the hood or underneath the vehicle to check for missing pollution equipment. I guess us Okies are going to try it without inspections and see what happens?

Same emission regulations here in downstate N. Y. , any vehicle after 1984 must have all factory emission equipment in place and working, then the car has to be run on a dyno for the 5 gas exhaust analysis. Pass or fail it is 35. 00. The only exceptions are weight over 8501 lbs. or 4 wheel drive- they are idle "sniff" tested. You non emission states are lucky. Rick.

If emission laws were for real and were really trying to reduce emissions it would be different. But my old 84 Dodge 318 when it hit 80000 miles went down the tubes. The original emission equipment was shot, air pump was trash, cat was clogged, carb was shot, all air injection lines going into exhaust manifold were toast, and most of all it was running rough and getting zilch for mileage. Now do I replace all that with like kind at a cost of over 3000. 00 and have to replace it all again in 80000 miles?

Well I went the other route and pulled it all and went high performance options. If I re-jet my Carter and put a couple of high performance cats on,I am sure I could pass actual emissions. However it would flunk visual. To he11 with em at least I don't have to mess with it for the next 100000 miles and I can tune it.

I feel like the state of cali is about as close to communist as you can come without waving the red flag. Underneath all that talk about doing everything for the children is a money grab to not only get our money, but take our power of freedom with it.

Colorado is getting more and more of Cailf. in it. Here,s something interesting. Last time I went up to see my Grandkids,my son said that they had missed close to a week of school for "Snow"days. Is it my imagination?I don't remember that rough of a winter in Colo, Springs. Or should I say Calif,Springs?Colorado is catching some serious Calif overflow. I think I would rather have the Texans!

Lance,

You are right Colorado is getting more and more like California. A lot of Californians have moved into our area and they think they own the place because they have money to throw away... They need to get out Colorado and go back to California IMO and stop ruining our state. By the way I have a good friend in Colorado Spring who just recently used my address to register his car(its a highly modified import) because of emissions and also got him to buy some Amsoil #ad

It goes both ways, CA probably gets more immigrants than any other state. Can't blame folks for wanting the good weather and high paying jobs. Can't blame them for wanting to get out of the rat race either.
