Helmet or no helmet

As those of us in the Mid Atlantic read with horror what this team of cowards is doing to innocent people the anger is compounded at the political backlash that is brewing. The supposed "highpowered . 223 round" from a " deadly sniper rifle "has many gearing up for a call for everything from civilian owned AR-15 bans to "tactical rifle" bans. Those who do not understand that any bolt rifle that can be taken into the hunting woods can be wielded with the same deadly and senseless effect that these sociopaths have perpetrated on us are yelling for reform. I read in the Washington Post the nonsense that " these rifles are more lethal at longer ranges than ordinary rifles". Soon there will be another call for scoped rifles to be banned or limited. I am a Democrat and not an NRA member but an avid shooter and am sounding the call for all responsible gun owners to condemn these acts and to oppose through the political process any attempt by anti-gunners who have no clue to use this tragedy to make a point. I hope our state and federal law enforcement professionals will put these criminals in a criminal justice system that eagerly awaits them.

I too thought about the gun control efforts these tragedies will bring out. The ATF and some of the gun contol advocates must be wetting their pants over the "amunition" this will give their cause.

I don't know. This morning on CNN they asked viewers to email in their feelings on gun control and snipers. They said later that the "vast majority" of 900 respondents felt the gun control wasn't the answer and would do little to alleviate the problem. Far from a scientific poll but it must mean something.

That's good illflem... . maybe people are finally seeing that it's not the gun's fault it's who has it. The way that I see it, even if there is gun control the criminals are going to get a gun if they want one... and unfortunately they'll probably harm someone with it. I hope the guy gets caught and given what he deserves.

Yeah..... let me get him in my sights..... I've got his "silencer"

Witnesses report hearing a "gunshot", I doubt that he's using a supressed weapon.

No better

time to join and contribute to the NRA, is there?!

You have no voice without them in these matters.

Check out their foundation which allows you to bestow some or all of your estate (at time of death) tax free. We are doing just that. No better cause!

Just a little info about the first post.

99. 99% of all sniper and tactical rifles are bolt action. The ARMY Sniper rifle (M-24) is a modified Remington 700 bolt gun. I only know of a few tactical " Sniper" rifles that are semi-auto, and they are extremely expensive.

A silencer could be in use but it isn't very effective on a 223. We used them on some 16s in Nam, it will cut the report down to half the distance or better.

Sniper Rifles

I know full well what sniper rifles are I own one and shoot it proficiently. There are scores of AR-15s that have been used in the law enforcement arena as tactical rifles despite the fact that they are not well suited to it and NYPD ESU has used Mini-14s in this role for years and that truly boggles the mind. The point is that if an AR has been used there will be another assault on civilian ownership of this weapon at a time when excellent products are available to law abiding citizens. It is the weapon of choice for three gun matches. Springfield Armorys outstanding series of National Match . 308's might be in the cross hairs. My heaven a magazine fed semi-auto that shoots far and accurate. Everyone run for the hills. I feel that a run will be made on any long weapon that doesn't look like a woods or plains deer rifle- instead of banning nonsense like bayonet lugs and flashhiders on AR's and simliar rifles like what happened in the nineties -bull barrels, "tactical scopes", trigger jobs and other essentials for sporting riflemen may be on the block. Imagine if a company like Leupold caved in to political pressure and did not allow its tactical series of scopes to be sold to civilians- the fine scope on my Remington would be the last I would own. We just need to wait and see and vote wisely in November.

There's something these Damn polititions and do gooders have GOT to realize GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE... PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!!!! Just lay that gun on the ground and don't touch it. .

See how many people it kills then!!

That IS scarey  My mini-14 would do a 6" group at 100 yds when my AR-15 would do 1" at 100 yds, both scoped.

I have figured for a long time that there would be an "engineered" reason for them to come after the long bolts after they had nuetered the semi-autos (aka "assult rifle").

It is my opinion that most of these high profile incidents come at ironic times and are engineered by someone, and no I dont think Oswald was the only shooter...

I wonder if this will have any affect on the "Assault weapon"/magazine ban ending in a 2004? If nothing were to happen the law would expire in September 2004, and we could all go back to buying 15, 20, 30, or more round mags and own rifles without worrying about what they look like.

Assault is a behavior, NOT a weapon.

Aren't most sniper rifles 7 mag, not . 223?

All rifles ...

ALL RIFLES are sniper rifles.

I tell ya folks, the anti's are just getting orgasms about this guy in the DC area.

You had better write Bush directly about this lunacy about "fingerprinting" guns ... any person with common sense knows that this just NATIONAL REGISTRATION!!!!!!!

Pure and simple ... and George Bush is going down the road his

back-stabbing father did about the socalled assault weapons ban.

Write your reps, senators, and GW himself about putting a stop to this nonsense before it gets going in the legislature.

Because as you know, registration ALWAYS leads to confiscation, then those in power who don't want your opinions around will send the FBI, ATF, and cops to round you up ... don't think these organizations would not hesitate to make war on the American people ... they would welcome it in order to control us. These liberal anti-gun, anti-liberty look at the election that was held in Iraq and wish for it to happen here ... vote for Hitlery Clinton or die!

Sniper rifles

Most are . 308 firing a 168 grain BTHP load. 300 Winchester Magnum has found some favor as well as 378 Lapua Magnum for longer counter sniper use. Police do use the . 223 in this role but the lions share are Remington 700 bolts firing a . 308 match load. This combination gives the necessary accuracy to place a shot where the individual cannot respond and all motor skills shut down. Police tactical shooting has a liability component and the shots are shorter- 70 yds or less I believe is the national average but highly accurate. This coward in Va/Md is not a sniper he is a murderer who is probably an average shooter who is a whacko.

Sniper?

Shooting from 50 to 150 yards and most of the time hitting the target isn't a very great achievement. I suppose I'd be considered a sniper too. I was just out at the range today with a 4" fixed sight . 41 mag revolver shooting from 50 yards and hitting 20oz water bottles (well, sometimes :)). Are we going to ban the sniper revolvers next?

I'm not much into rifles, but I thought most snipers were taking shots out over 500 yards.
