on my way to our property in Colorado i stopped for a snack and started smelling rotten eggs, didn't really think too much about it, after we arrived i continued to smell this smell from the truck, opened the hood and found my passenger side battery hot with steam coming from the top. i knew the batteries in the truck were on there last leg but i have never had one heat up like that. before i left Dallas the driver side batt. still showed green in the view plate but the passenger side had showed black for a while. . the truck still started fine but by the time a left wall-mart after getting two new batteries the volt meter on the truck wouldn't ever even get close to the 14 mark. anyway to make a long story short i changed both batteries and everything seems great but i am just curious what would cause a battery to burn up like that?

:eek:

i got the ever-start maxx i believe (the yellow cased ones) they have a CA of 1000 and a CCA of 900, i was going to get the Trojan commercials if i was in Dallas, but in this kinda emergency case i couldnt wait to find a trojan dealer here in CO. and i think i paid around sixty a piece from the wally world in alamosa co. with a 5 dollar a piece core charge. from my previous research for the CA and CCA's the Trojan commercials are the best value but they are only about $20 a piece cheaper than a optima. but the ever-start maxx does look like a very comparable battery.

Must be only avail in USA Wally's. Was in a CDN Wally today and there was no "Yellow" cased batteries there. Heck there wasn't even a battery to fit our trucks. If I chose this route I'll have to wait till I swing across the border for a little R&R. Thanks for the info. Cheers

We have a fairly large Wally near us in Athens Ga. and they don't have a battery that was even close to what we needed. Tires either!Truck or trailer!Bought a interstate D series workaholic from Napa for 89. 95

I got recommended Exide replacement batteries. They are NO WHERE near comparable replacement batteries.

The CCA was higher than OEM, but the RC is not even close. I use an Espar and it needs good batteries.

Chip;

It sounds as if you got a series 27 battery from Wally World. This batteries are private labeled by (drum roll) Johnson Controls (JCI) the very same company that makes Interstate.

What did you mean by "... but by the time a left wall-mart after getting two new batteries the volt meter on the truck wouldn't ever even get close to the 14 mark. ... "

Was the voltmeter running higher with the dying battery?

"Was the voltmeter running higher with the dying battery?"

Undoubtedly a shorted cell in the one battery - and that reduced the apparent system voltage as "seen" by the charging circuit - it was probably seeing in the vicinity of about 11+ volts max due to the failed/shorted cell...

NOW, be sure to carefully clean up the likely acid boil-over mess down under and around that battery location to avoid later problems - a good dousing with lots of baking soda dissolved in warm water, then thoroughly flushed with clean water works well... ;)

yea, when i left the wal-mart before i installed the new batteries, the lights were all dim and the volt meter on the dash was way to the left of the center mark (14 amps?) my truck normally runs a little above the center mark on the volt meter.

Those wally world batteries are a great deal. 3 year over the counter warranty and prorated for 6 more years after that. Wally worlds are everywhere. I needed new batts while traveling-no problem-super wally world right down the road. $ 60 apiece with a handle. :D
