Can somebody make a recommendation as to which steering box fix I need to buy and where can I get them? Are they hard to install?

I also used Darins which I got from Piers but it took me about 40 minutes. I had a bit of trouble getting one bolt threaded but all in all no hassle at all and worth every penny. A floor jack to hold up the brace while installing is very helpful as that thing could get heavy and awkward after a few minutes of trying to hold it up there. A second set of hands would be helpful but even without not a problem. If I recall you are literally talking 4 bolts off and the Pitman arm nut off. And then set the brace up and replace the 4 bolts and the pitman arm bolt with new ones supplied in the kit. My biggest hassle was finding the socket to replace the pitman arm nut. Something like 1 1/4 inch deepwell. Picked one up at Graingers for around $14.

I had about 70k on mine before I added it and I did notice better steering and less wander. I don't think it is a cure all for all steering issues but it sure helps. After seeing it I really cant believe they dont do something like it straight from the factory

I wish Darren's was powder coated. Mines about a year old and almost completely rusty. It was nice and black when I bought it.

I have purchased two of Darrins stabalizers from Piers. I put one on my 01 and the second on my Dad's 98. 5 and both trucks now have a much better feel to the steering and steering seems to wander less. My bracket has been on for about 6 months and there is no sign of rust on it anywhere.

steering fix

I have a '96 with 56,000 miles on it. The steering feels fine. It's a 2 wheel drive. Do you think the steering stabilizer would make it feel more solid or help keep my front end parts from wearing out sooner. I'd like to keep this truck for a long time so I'm thinking it might be a good investment. Jim

Jim:

I was not having any real issues but a slight wander and thought the same thing you are. Sure couldn't hurt. After seeing it and using it my steering is definitely better, more solid, more responsive and less wander. I don't see how it couldn't help the longevity of all the steering components especially the steering box.

I put the Darin brace on a 2001. 5 and on my '95. Both are 2wd and the brace helped them both. It was more of a preventative maintenance thing on the '01, but on the '95 it was a definate improvement.
