Hey guys this morning when I went out to get some tools from the truck at work I noticed a oil slick under the front of the truck. I got down on the wet asphalt and noticed it was coming from my steering box. It looked like the area around where the shaft goes in to the box. Is this fixable? Is it something I could do myself? Are the parts available?Would this be a good time to get a borgeson shaft?Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can get a seal from the parts house and change just the input seal. Hopefully it is just cracked and worn. If the input shaft into the box moves up and down the the box will need to be rebuilt. You can either get a kit with the bearings or an exchange box. The Steering box on first jens is much better than the later models should just be the seal. 2$ part if you have a good parts house... .

Mine's been leaking some also. My brother just replaced the one on his 95, not sure if it is the same box, but it was $88 for a rebuilt one from Napa. I think I'm going to go that way rather than just change the seal and take a chance that something else is wrong.

Well, I just called and got a price, was quoted $83 exchange.

I'm not pushing NAPA here, just giving info. I'm sure the rebuilt boxes can be bought at just about any parts house.

Guys, try a search on the our forums for this.

I'm certain I posted the part numbers for this fix.

The repair kit includes the seals etc for the stub shaft and the pitman arm.

Oh crap! its been a long week alreadyand its just getting started. Duh - Didn't read careful enough. I was thinking steering PUMP, not box.

Please disregard my ramblings in the above post!

If you decide to replace the box, LOOK CLOSELY at the unit before you leave the store. It took three tries (NAPA) before I got a box that worked. First one had a bad shaft (internal) that acted like it would jump a thread internally and reclock the wheel when turning from lock to lock. The second one never made it out of the box, the pitman arm shaft was completely buggered up, I wouldn't have been able to install the arm. Third one is working so far. I will say that NAPA stood up and took care of me. I got $90 in labor charges rebated back after the parts were inspected and found to be junk. So much for quality control at the manufacturer.

Mine is leaking also. I am trying some Lucas power steering leak stop treatment first. My NAPA price with exchange is $250. If I do replace, I am considering installing the borgeson steering shaft at the same time.
