The steering box on my '99 has developed a "seeping" leak at 182k miles. I would like to hear from anyone who has repaired / replaced the steering box. What did you use, and have you been happy with it?

Thanks for your time.

My son's jeep steering box was seeping fluid from the input shaft seal. We tried some Lucas stop leak (Auto Zone has it). $20 for a quart, guaranteed to work. We pulled all the fluid out of the reservoir with a turkey baster and refilled it with the Lucas, about a pint. The leak stopped! Worth a try.

Thanks GAmes. I picked up a turkey baster and the Lucas treatment and put it in the pump last night - I hope that takes care of it!

If it doesn't work post back and I'll detail how to remove and replace steering box. I replaced the steering box on my 97 with a PSC box and added a new SS 3rd gen track bar, and DSS to protect the new steering box.

It is not too bad a job other then getting the pitman arm off the box. It takes alot of torque and you need some kind of pitman puller or sometimes a wack with hammer works.

Thanks Dave M - I will post with the Lucas results. When I began searching for replacement boxes, the PSC name showed up pretty quickly. I went to their site, but I can only find the box for the '80-'93 models. Am I looking in the wrong place?

The last I read they quit making the PSC steering box I got. In fact you can't buy any 2nd gen box from them. You might give them an email or call. My next box will be PSC hydro-assit but it is very pricey.

You might try PSS Power Steering Services from Illonois I believe. Do a search on PSS or wait for someone to recommend a 2nd gen box.

Edit: The PSC box I got is a 3 turn. I'd recommend that for any box you get. PSS was making a 3 turn rebuilt box and several have used it and were satisifed. It's a 16:1 ratio I think and it makes one finger effortless steering.

I replaced mine at about 450k with a new OEM from mopar4less, but I understand 2WD is a lot lesss demanding than 4X4.

I know I have a 3rd Gen, but mine developed a leak around 145k. Just enough to make it wet and very small drops. I bought a rebuild kit, but I also bought a steering box stabilzer. I put the SBS on first, it holds the output shaft from wobbling back and forth on the seal. The leak stopped and all is dry at 155k. If your steering feels ok for a 2nd Gen, you might be able to slow or stop the leak and get much inproved steering from a steering box stabilzer.

I just installed a PSC hydro kit and it works awesome. PSC will rebuild your core but only for a limited time. They told me that they plan on only rebuilding cores for hydro kits in the near future. As far as I can tell all reman steering boxes from the other companies are usually junk. My PSC unit is super tight.
