My 2007. 5 developed a hiss in the power steering/braking system today. It is there at idle or driving. When you apply the brakes or turn the steering wheel-either direction, driving or stopped-it stops. When stopped with the hood up you can tell it's coming from the driver side but can't pinpoint exact location. This is a new one to me. Any ideas before I start throwing expensive parts at it?

Have you ever changed the power steering fluid? Both the brakes and steering work off of the power steer pump, and while there is no recommended change interval from Dodge it does need to be done.

How many miles?

118k miles. The fluid was replaced at 86K miles when the steering gearbox was replaced (pitman arm seal ruptured) in nov 2011.

The hiss is likely the lining of one of the lines slipping into the oil stream. Known issue, I think it is the pressure line to the brake diverter that is the culprit but do not remember for sure.

X2!! get it check ASAP. On mine, a piece came loose and got stuck in the steering gear box, caused a catch in the steering. Not a good feeling when trying to turn.

It is most likely the high pressure hose into the hydroboost. Remove the hose and look for the clear/white teflon inner liner sticking out the end of the hose.

I will pull the hoses and look this weekend. We are driving the 2000 until I can check it. It does it until you turn the wheel or push the brake pedal. Even stopped if you turn the wheel slightly or just push the brake pedal an inch it stops. The line from the pump to the hydroboost was replaced (with dealer part) 2 years ago when the gearbox was replaced due to it rubbing to the point I was afraid it would rupture.

It was the lining. It had slipped up through the hard line to the hydroboost. I disconnected the rubber line at the hard line connection and pulled the tube out. Quiet now. I would have replaced the hose but the dealer is the only place I can find one here and they are having to order it. The part number has changed from 52122339AB to 52122339AC. Maybe the new number has solved the lining problem.
