hi guys im new to this site . i have 99 2500 4x4 over the last week or so i noticed a noise in the colomn over bumps like a clunk noise. doesnt seem to have any other issues. thanks

hard to say--but does it sound like it's from inside the cab or in the engine bay--if it's in the bay I'd check out the shaft and see if have some play or somthing looks out of place--if it's in the cab--don't know except to look up under the dash and see if a bolt is missing or ?????... ... good luck... ... ... chris

Bob, I've been a member since 5/01 and have often wondered what the "clock spring" is? please share - thanks.

The clockspring is the interconnector in the steering wheel so you can turn the wheel, and the wiring needed on the wheel itself can exist. eg, airbag wiring, cruise control, radio controls on the steering wheel. The unit has about 4' of wound metal with conductors on it to relay the signals back and forth from the wheel to the rest of the truck. .

Tumbleweed: move your steering wheel around a bit to see if there is any play in the interior column. . If your truck has over 100k on it, I would seriously check the intermediate steering shaft, which is in the engine compartment. Do a rotational with your hand, and front/back. If there is any movement, it may be your problem.

On another note, if you dont have a fuel pressure gauge on that 99 24v yet, now would be a very good time to get one on there. Many an injection pump have been saved by monitoring the pressure. .

mebe bob can explain it better heh

I have a noise in my steering column but it's only when I turn. I found out that it is the spring that comes up to the fire wall in the engine bay. I just hit it with some WD40 and the noise goes away. It comes back after a few months though, maybe I'll start using motor oil or something.

I have a "click" as well when I turn the wheel, I haven't tore into it yet... I think I caused it from climbing in and out of the truck, using the steering wheel to pull myself in...

tumbleweed -

i have the 'clunk' too. it's not a click, but a sick feeling your front end is going to fall out of the truck.

i got when i hotdogged it thru mud puddle and bent the track bar. that was 185K miles ago. my brother hates driving my truck 'cause the clunk unnerves him.

i feel sure it's coming from the cab. i don't know the anatomy of the steering wheel so i only pray something won't finally break and give me free-for-all while on the hwy.

i replaced my intermediate shaft due the white knuckle syndrome. i bought dss? steering stabilizer so i know it's not the box moving around. i'm getting ready to change brakes to egr and read somewhere they can make a clunk if you have the defective calipers like i do. that's the only other option i can think of.

defective=jerking you in the other lane while trying to stop.

if you figure it out please pm me. it's on my list of to-do's this year.
