2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Steering Column Lock Broken

I noticed recently that I can turn my steering wheel even with the key removed from the ignition switch. I thought the steering wheel used to lock with key removed. Should I worry about it and get it repaired? Is there a chance it could suddenly lock or restrict movement of the steering wheel causing a loss of control? Has anyone else ever had an issue similar to this? Thanks!
