Steering Gear Box

Are there anyways to adjust the steering box so that you can get rid of the sloppy feeling in these older trucks?

Borgesons aftermarket gear box have only been lasting me a couple years. They start off nice and tight and then end up wandering all over the road.

Are there any ways to brace the box?

As signature says trucks sitting on a 6inch lift with 35inch tires.

On all steering boxes there is an adjustment on them but you cant go much on them .
do you have borgenson steering shaft and a steering stabilizer and is your frame mount good if you contact ram connection the steering box works good or put a cabel from the drivers around the box to the passenger side and tighten with a turn buckle

Yes, I do have the aftermarket steering shaft and gear box from Borgeson. I'm actually on my second borgeson gear box which is no longer tight.

Check out the boxes from Redhead. www.redheadsteeringgears.com I, as well as others here seem to be having great success with these !! Granted, I recently did mine, but hopefully others here will chime in as well .

With a six inch lift I think it is close to impossible to have a "thight" steering, every bump in the road makes your truck wander because of the terrible steering linkage geometry.

Haha, those gear boxes only last me about 2 years from brand new to all over the road again.

Which Borgeson shaft did you get? Is there a rag coupling in the system? Or a working sliding shaft?
As a steering shaft design engineer (semi-retired) I can tell you that the lift is putting a lot of axial stress on the system. It must be allowed to move axially, that might be your issue.
With the front tires off the ground does it feel "lumpy" as you turn the wheel? In other words does the force to turn the wheel change as it goes around? You would notice it every 90 degrees.

MMeier~ I've only ever heard of redhead on this forum so I don't know anything about them. Something I'd have to dig into.

JLeonard~ Its the replacement shaft with the rag joint that I got. Times before when the front's been off the ground and I've turned the wheel looking for play I never noticed any lumpy feeling to it, actually felt really smooth.

Have you done a crossover steering setup yet? Or are you still working off of the OEM geometry?

Still OEM setup ENafziger, I have not heard of or even looked for a cross-over setup on this truck.

Do a google search on Dana 60 cross over steering you will see a company out of Colorado ORD Off Road Design they sell a complete kit for cross over steering that bolt's in . you get rid of the Crappy Plate that the box bolt's too and you end up with the steering box bolted directly to frame . the you have tight steering . Once you drive a truck with cross over steering you won't drive a stock steering controlled truck again .
