I have a '98 that has developed a grinding or bad bearing noise in the steering column.

You can't feel the binding but the popping is noticable.

Is there a TSB on this or has any one else experienced this?

Thanks

Gary

There is a TSB on Fritz's page. Don't have time to retrieve it for you but it states that the lube comes out of the steering shaft and causes the symptoms you are describing. Supposedly you squeeze the boot and it forces the grease back into the space between the telescoping shaft and the problem stops. Haven't tried it but it sounds kinda cheesy to me. Just open all the 94 and up TSBs and skim thru. You'll pick it right out.

I have a slight clunking coming from mine. But I have never noticed a grinding. My problem is not the intermediate shaft or the steering gear. It is in the column; probably at the base. On my 96 I can grab the spring at the base of the column, it is the spring that the double-D shaft exits through its center and it protrudes through the firewall, and turn it and the clunking will go away... only to return at a later time.

I found a local column repair guy, through a body shop, and he can swap the entire column unit over for about the same cost, $350, as the column from Chrysler because he gets a good discount and it only takes him about an hour. So far everytime I get close to having money to fix it something else with the truck sucks up the funds. Brakes, sending units, tires, and lately fuel. So for now I just turn the spring.

I took the truck to Dodge and now have a new steering column. They danced around the topic and tought I was crazy but I persisted.
