Hello, Hopefully one of you guys has an anwsure to this problem,99 quad cab 4x4 longbox, I seem to feel a pop in the steering when i hit the brakes, sometimes it will repete when you hit the brakes mutiple times but not always, has anybody repaired this problem and if so whats involved.

Thanks Paul

Hey there, I think I had the exact same problem you are describing. In my case, I fixed everything else under the front end, and still didn't get rid of it until I replaced the intermediate steering shaft (easy, two bolts, and a lot of contortionism to get your arms in there to work on it). The odd thing was, the existing one did't feel like it had any more slop in it than the new one. Even when I pulled it out and had both of them sitting on the bench, the only difference I could feel was simply the ease of movement of the older one's u-joints, but they didn't have any "slop" in them that I would expect to cause the noise. Either way, there must have been something wrong with it, cause once the new one was in and torqued down, the noise was gone, and haven't heard it since. Hope this helps.

Thanks I,ll give the once over tommorow and see if anything looks bad, sound like I'm going to have to replace it to find out though. Paul

If ya have over 50-75k, I`d bet your tracking bar is also bad. That can cause a pop and sometimes a clunk. Have someone move the steering wheel 6-8" in a back-forth manner while you watch the ball joint of the bar below the drivers feet. Luke's link worked good for me, but when we put it on my dad's old '99 it rubbed the punkin. .

good luck

Reach over from the driver side fender, grab the intermediate shaft and wiggle it. Shoud be zero play if it's good. Mine had 1/8" after I removed it, but only if I extended it to the same length as when it was installed. When I wiggled it while in the truck the play felt like 1/16"

Dane, when you say play is that back and forth or fore and aft? I tried this with mine and I have some play. I can definately feel it in my hand when I move the intermediate shaft back and forth. Damned popping, clunking noise in the steering column has been driving me nuts. Not to mention I've put a ton of money into the front end of this truck.

I've had the same problem with my '02, but usually only when it's been raining and I am making a right turn and braking a little... could this be the same problem with the intermediate steering shaft or track bar?
