Steering Problem

I'm helping a friend diagnose a steering problem with his 2004. 5 4x4. It has 85000 miles on it and he just put new ball joints in it. When driving, it tracks perfectly. If you make a small correction, the steering wheel kinda surges and pulls the wheel toward the direction of the turn. Any ideas?

I have no idea but that just sounds scary. Could it be air in the power steering system?

Sounds like a steering box problem. There is a torsion bar in there which sets the effort, and maybe it's broken? I think with today's "remove and replace" mentality, you throw away the whole box... .

ya sounds like a box. That happened to me about a year ago i also put a steering box brace on when the box was changed
