Steering Problem Solved

I posted a couple of months ago about my truck steering itself at times. I replace the steering shaft with a Borgeson which helped, but didn't fix the problem. Today I discovered that the left U-joint in the front axle was junk. It would flex in one direction, but not the other. So I put the BFH to use and replaced the U-joint, carrier bearings, and seals. Now it steers like a dream. Apparently if the axle was positioned in the right way, the U-joint would bind while turning the truck and cause the steering to snap back during a turn. I rotated the tires and got the everything greased. It sure was an enjoyable way to relax after a week of final exams. :D Now I am all ready for snow and pulling Fords out of the ditch.

Good to hear!

Nice to hear that a weird problem with a first gen is fixed-up now. I never thought of that being a problem, but at least when it happens to me I'll know :) I need to get that shaft in my pick-up before it parks it self in a ditch :D.

R. E. Miller, The ditch parking isn't cool. Especially because the 4wd won't work right to pull yourself out. :D Seriously, my truck used to change lanes by itself. I am very lucky I didn't hit someone or crash. The big problem was that the problem occured very sparadically. Sometimes it would go 6 months without doing it and then it would do it for two weeks straight. I just thought other 1st gen owners would like to store this info away for future reference.
