i recently heard on the news about a recall of the steering mech. that will effect the airbags

does this effect our trucks

Do a search on clockspring. I believe thats what your talking about and you'll get plenty of threads to read.

Have fun :)

recall announced on news this AM

I heard on NPR that Daimler/Chrysler announced a recall on the steering for late model Dakotas, Durangos, and Rams. I was only half awake, so I missed the details, but I do know I wasn't dreaming.

Has anyone heard more?

I heard on the news that it affected Dakotas, Durangos and Rams (2000 models, I believe). Haven't heard exactly which 2000's though,

I heard something this morning on the national news about a rather large recall that includes something like '97-current model Rams. The local Dodge service department (and I don't know anything about how on-the-ball they might be) just told me that it does not involve EVERY Ram, but has something to do with a separation plate(?). He told me to watch my mailbox... Oh, boy...

Maybe this is something other then the clockspring? Since he mentioned "airbag" the lil light went off in my head (although rather dim)... so if there is a new one I haven't heard bout it yet.

nytimes article

Here's an article from the nytimes today:

It doesn't say much, just that this has been an ongoing recall that was made public today, that it affects 216,100 trucks (exactly that many?), and it has to do with sound muffling material that may interfere with the driver's side airbag

It happened to me

I was pulling out of my drive about a month ago. As I turned the wheel, I heard a click-clunk in the steering wheel, and the airbag light illuminated. I ducked, waiting for the fetchin' thing to deploy, and then shut down the rig and called the dealer. They said I need to bring it in. I said "no sh!$, but can I drive it or does it need to be towed?" The last thing I wanted was the airbag to deploy in my face going down the road!! Well, it was the clockspring, and they replaced it.

Two days later I got a recall notice in the mail. However, I had my truck in for steering problems (steering box is going to be replaced) last week, and they replaced it again. I guess they don't keep very good records, otherwise they would have realized that it had already been done. This sort of crap is what leaves me with an overabundance of confidence in my five-dingy dealership. NOT!

I heard the same NPR report early this morning. Don't remember the details but I know it included my '99, as well as other models. I think this is something new. I'm going into my dealer tomorrow for some other warranty work and I'll ask them about it. They probably won't know anything and I don't trust that we always get the notices.

Thanks Ken,

I think that resolves any confusion as to whether it is sound deadening material, or the clockspring, or both. The answer is they are one and the same.

I'll check my MDH to see if I'm included.
