Yep, she's had it. I'm leaning toward Flaming River, but any suggestions are welcome.

Okay, I just checked on them(FR) and I am confused about the 2 u-joints? What would you do with the rag joint? It doesn't say anything about it.

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

The "rag joint" or isolator coupling as we call it in the steering business serves two functions.

1. It allows for some angular misalignment. The second U joint on the Flaming River product will accomplish this.

2. It isolates the noise/vibration from the steering box and prevents it from comming up to the steering wheel (both axially and angularly) The second U joint in the Flaming River shaft will not isolate anything.

This could possibly turn the steering wheel into a "speaker" of sorts.

Someone who has eliminated the rag joint should chime in here and comment as to whether there are negative effects. Sometimes it doesn't make any difference in a old truck like ours that makes a lot of noise anyway... .

Steve, if you cut off the rag joint and eliminate it, I would like to have old one. I'd like to measure it and see if we (Timken/Torrington) have any couplings that we currently use that will fit the application.

Thanks,

Exactly how do you attach the u-joint to the shaft where the rag joint was?

Does the Borgeson use the rag joint? The only thing I don't like about the Borgeson is the way you have to grind a flat spot on the splined shaft, does Flaming River use this technique too? I need to find something quick so I can put her back in service.

Thanks, Steve

The Borgeson is a piece of cake to install and a lot cheaper. Grinding the flat spot takes about a minute. I have one and it is the best thing I ever did. Summit has the Borgeson and Flaming River in their new catalog. Good luck

I think I'll go with the Borgeson, cutting off the rag joint does not seem to hot to me. When I install it, do I really need to replace the seal in the steering box? I have alot of other things going bad right now.

(Borgeson is on its way)

Thanks, Steve

Borgeson

You'll be happy you chose the Borgeson.

No, you don't have to R&R the stub shaft seal, but since you have the joint off, might as well take an extra hour to do it ,especially if it's beginning to show a leak.

I replaced mine because it was dripping oil. Not hard to do. Used the part no. posted in the "sticky"

I used a die grinder to grind a flat onto the stub shaft. Very easy to do,just make certain that you have the coupling in place which allows wheels straight ahead/steering wheel centered:D
