I was trying to take my steering shaft off and I can't get it to telescope. There is a little rust around the area where it should telescope. I tried using lots of penetrating oil and banged on the shaft for a while but it still won't budge. I also tried banging on the end of the shaft with the nut undone so that the shaft should slide but I was worried about bending the ears around the ujoint. Are there any tricks to getting this moving again?

At this point, the only way that I can see to take it off is either to fight with taking the steering box out or cutting the shaft and putting a new one in. If I replace it, should I be putting an aftermarket or oem one in?

I know how you feel, I've been there.

I used a rachet tie down strap hooked at the fire wall end of the steering shaft around the lower part of the U joint, the other end went around the frame somewhere down by the steering gear.

Then I racheted it in, and with that it colapsed.

I replaced my OE with a Borgeson, been happy with that !

I also replaced the lower bearing on the steering column some time later. this kit was easy to install and made a huge difference.

good luck

So what you are saying is that you intentionally broke the shaft? That is kind of what I was thinking. I just need to get a new shaft before I do that though.
