I bought a 2002 used with 40,000 miles. The steering seems "stiff", not real easy to turn the wheel as my 92 Dodge has been. Everything appears to be working fine, the truck does not wander, the wheels turn freely when jacked up. The brakes (4 wheel disc) also feel as though you need to push on the pedal harder than normal even though the truck stops quickly. It almost seems as though the power steering pump and brake booster are not turning fast enough or somehow not generating enough power-so to speak. Is this a normal condition for these trucks? I get used to it but then when I drive my 92 it is the first difference I notice. The 92 brakes even have a better "feel".

I have heard that the little screen inside the back of the power steering pump can become plugged and restrict flow. This screen is behind the fitting that the pressure line hooks into. I have no idea if this is your problem or not but it's a thought.

'Buck,

Was that you I saw out at Hardings on Memorial Day (morning)? I had stiff steering only when moving & turning and it turned out that one of the front axle U-joints were bound up tight. But if your brakes are also hard, then it's probably a P/S pump problem. Stop over at OSJL & pick up a turkey baster. Draw out the fluid and look for junk. I'd also clean the screen while your at it.
