Im wanting to have a new aftermarket head unit installed in my truck which has the audio controls on the back side of the steering wheel and im curious if anyone knows if they will work with an aftermarket radio or not?

With some aftermarket radios you can buy an interface module to connect the radio to the steering wheel controls. The controls connect to the central timer module and the CTM communicates with the radio via the CCD data bus. It's not just a bunch of wires from here to there.

I never use the controls. It's just as easy to reach over and turn the knob.

Thanks for the info. I cant see me using the wheel mounted controls either just was curious if they would interface and how.

I love useing the steering wheel controls . once you get use to it they are great. if the aftermarket radio has remote then 9 times out of 10 it will work with the right module .

The after market headunit I used has a "wired remote" input. The interface Crutchfield recommended has a choice from 12 functions. The head unit also has bluethooth. So I set it up as follows: Left center switch answers the phone, right center ends the phone call, left rocker controls volume, right rocker "seeks". Why would one not use controls under their finger tips, I miss not having them in my other vehicles...

I recently had a nice Kenwood installed. They used a device to let me use my steering wheel controls. It has bluetooth and a rear usb so i have an ipod connected at all times. When listening from ipod with the left side controls I can scroll up/down to find my music. Love those controls. It's not that easy to do-at least for me wasn't. There are a lot of wires, and the device needs to be programmed to remember the assigned keys from the steering wheels. Not every head unit will work. So, research and buy one that will work. Enjoy!
