My steering wheel leather is worn out at the 12:00 position. It is irritating. Mopar wants around $200 for a new steering wheel. Is there someone who can recover it, or a nice cover for it? I don't want it much thicker than it is now.

Thanks as usual for the advice!

steering wheel

easiest and cheapest is to go to a parts store and buy a genuine leather lace on cover --then spend a couple of hours lacing it on yourself. $10-$20, probably. take a look at www.american-stitches.com. they will apparently recover your wheel. they say they have a loaner wheel program while they have yours. salvage yard??? one of those should work for you--lots of luck

:)

I have used the leather stitch on from Pep Boys, I believe its the same as from Genos, about $15. 00. The guy that bought my last truck commented that the wheel was still in good shape, he didnt know the cover wasnt original.

Wheel cover

The one from Geno's is a "Wheel Skins" brand, ~$25. Installed one a few weeks ago. I love it!!! Took my time with the install and it looks great. Remember, "tight is right". Highly recommend the product. Good luck!

If you're gonna install a stitch-on type, then the best one I have ever installed is the "Wheel Skins". This has the absolute best grain and feel I have ever used. I've installed several and they even use the best and strongest lace I've ever used. I'm kinda glad to see Geno's now carries them because I need to do both my trucks before they get any worse.

BTW, I work for Honda and a few years back I was poking around to see who made their accessory stitch-on wheel covers, and I was suprised to find out they were made by Wheel Skins.

I've had real good luck with a leather conditioner from Griot's Garage (www.griotsgarage.com). Used once every several months, it has kept my OE steering wheel cover looking great for over three years now.

tell them to replace it

I had mine replaced @ about 20k... . same reason, leather got all funky. The service guy said they have replaced a bunch of them... . bad leather? Anyway, the new one has now been on twice as long and still feels good. I'd try that route first, a decent leather should feel better and better with time, not worse and worse.

Steering wheel covers

My cover is also in need of attention, any of you guys have a picture of your covers as I had gotten a lace on cover for mine and when I slid it on it did not look like it was going to cover the outer ring completely as in the seams coming together even if I would have pulled it as tight as needed.

Thanks,

Paul

PBaker

The ones at Pep Boys come in at least 2 sizes and mine looked like it wouldnt fit but by the time I finished lacing it on it was real tight and smooth so looked great, you really have to pull the thread tight to draw the seams together but its worth it.
