So, my 93 steering wheel only locks in one point in the 360 deg rotation. My 90 locks everwhere when the key is not in it.

Question. Is the 93 also suppose to lock everywhere with no key, or is it a different style?

Question two. As I gather it did lock everywhere at one point, where is the issue and does anyone know what to do to fix it?

Thanks!

Robert

I used to work for a company that made a lot of the steering components for the 94 and newer trucks (and lots for other vehicles before that as well).

There are several configurations... . some lock in only one place as you describe on your 93 , some lock in multiple locations as you describe on your 90. I doubt that it locks "everywhere" rather it may actually be every 30 degrees or something like that.

There will be "locking slots" formed or machined into the part that the steering wheel bolts to inside the column, and some design of locking tab that is allowed to drop in when the ignition key s in use.

Sometimes the number/configuration was at the discretion of the vehicle designers, sometime it was driven by the manufacturing process of the component.

"Generally speaking" it makes sense that ONE slot (ie one position to lock) is less costly to manufacture... hence the change makes sense to me from a manufacturing standpoint.

Sorry for the lengthy post... I guess I ate my weaties this morning. LOL

I dont mind the long post! I just learnt something! :) And yes, you are correct. It is about every 30 deg.

So, what do you other 93s have?

I realize this is an OLD post but i've been researching this subject a bit. I'm getting ready to put a Borgeson shaft on within the next month or so and read that it could be a pain if the wheel doesn't lock. It doesn't seem the 93' wheel wants to lock at all. It seems that might be normal? Robert did you ever find out any more on this? Will pulling the wheel be able to tell me if it's correct behavior for my wheel? Thanks for any help/education!

Never found out much more on it other than whats above. I am going to guess it may be a 1993 thing.

For mine, I did install a Borgeson shaft and had no issues. Infact I cant see why that would matter! I have done both styles (the 30 deg and 1 spot) style columbs and found no differance!

Keep forging ahead! :)
