2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Steering wheel Lock positions?

I just bought a 2001 2500 when I take the key out of the ignition the steering wheel does not always lock in position... the dealer says it will only lock in 4 spots. . is this true or should the wheel lock right where it is when you remove the key??

I don't have to turn the wheel very much in my 96 to get it to lock. I'll try to determine how many degrees tomorrow.

on my '99, I have to turn the wheel almost 180 to get a lock - very annoying

My wheel has to turn about plus or minus 45° for it to lock. (Yesterday, I thought it was less but after trying it it's about 45°) So that would be about 4 lock positions. It really doesn't matter though if it locks as I've seen first hand how the column goes together and its only an aluminum casting with a plastic (yup you guessed it - I said plastic) pin. Don't ask how I know as I don't need any hate mail on the lousy steering shafts.

Actually I'm from Naugatuck. I used to spend a lot of time in your end of Cheshire - past job at VDO in the industrial park. Now I work in Watertown (making steering components).
