Steering Wheel

My '96 with 60k mi just started shedding the steering wheel skin!?!?! I can't believe this! What do we do to get good wheel? Is there an aftermarket available? Or do I have to go to chrysler. #ad
Once I get the new one on, what do I do to make it last? I've never had a vehicle do this before, and this is the newest, lowest mileage I've ever had. My chvy's and toyota's never had this problem at 200k. the current Toyota is an '86 with 240k and has no signs of this problem. Please advise, hate the feel of the peeling wheel.

This is real common on these trucks. Pep Boys has a real nice cover for about $15. 00, looks like the one Geno's has. It is leather and sews on takes a while to do but looks almost factory when done. Doesnt look like a home craft project, very nice looking

I have the same problem on my wheel. I have 190000 KM and the truck is worked and plowed (lots of turning) everyday. Anyone know of a wheel upgrade,like a Grant or something,that will bolt on ?,(don't mind losing the airbag).

A company in Mesquite,TX will rework them with good leather for $250-300. I'm trying to get him several cores that are structurally sound so he can do an exchange. However, this is big $$$. , maybe Geno's or PEP Boys is your best viable solution. I think DC wants about $400 for the pieces to repair the wheel. Hope the quality is better than the oem, eh?

A couple of folks I've talked to have pinned the peeling problem down to cleaners that contain citrus. Apparently just residue citrus hand cleaner on your hands can start the peeling process.

I don't think the citrus cleaner is the only cause, as my truck is only used as a tow vehicle, and it does not require much cleaning, and I do not use many citrus based cleaners.

I was quoted about $150 from the local chrysler dealer for a new leather wheel, it does not seem so bad after seeing the above prices listed, but how do we make it last?

Any ideas are welcome.

I'm on my second one now... . 24k. The dealer replaced it free. Too early to tell if the new one will be any better... he acknowledged having problems with the leather on the steering wheels. My '95 fake-leather outlasted this '99 which is supposed to be genuine leather. Have the dealer look at it... any reasonable guy can see there is a problem. As you stated... real leather just does not wear like this. Hopefully they have done something to correct the matter.
