I'm a new member, and now own two Cummins Diesels, that I would like to learn everything about.

My first Cummins is in a 2003 Dodge 4x4, extended cab, long bed. Only modification is an Edge chip. I love the power and the fuel economy for a Full size 3/4 ton 4x4 truck.

My second Cummins is in a 2002 Sterling Acettera, with a trash compactor body mounted on it.

Now I know Cummins 5. 9's will last a long time, but I know my Cummins in my Sterling will give out long before my Dodge.

What I would like to know are the differences between the two engines. All I know now is that the Cummins in my Sterling holds more oil when I do an oil change.

Also, if I bought a 5. 9 Cummins out of a wrecked 2002 Dodge, would I be able to replace my 5. 9 in my Sterling with it when it gives out?

Thanks for all the info.

The commercial 5. 9s have different ECM programming, different cams, and more oil capacity. The commercial 5. 9s are setup to rev lower, so the cam is different and they're usually governed at 24-2600 rpm. The Dodge will rev to 3200.

I noticed what you said about lower reving. When cruising down the highway at 70 mph, it was turning about 2300 rpm. The tach only goes to 3000, but I've never noticed it get that high.

The engine will fall flat on its face after about 2600rpm. The Dodges fall at about 2700rpm, but will pull to 3200. Injector will open up the top end.

Then add a competition box (TST comp or Edge Drag box) and LOOK OUT-- it will pull hard to 3200+
