Sterling Offers New Midrange Conventional Truck

2/15/2007

Sterling Truck Corp. plans to introduce a new conventional Class 4-5 truck called the Sterling Bullet at the NTEA Work Truck Show 2007 on March 6.

The new truck is ideal for vocational applications including construction, landscaping, municipal services such as government and utility, and pickup and delivery applications.

"With the introduction of this tough new vehicle, Sterling is rounding out its extensive lineup of reliable work trucks," said Chris Patterson, president and CEO of Freightliner LLC. "Sterling dealers will now have an expanded selection of products across commercial vehicle classes 3 through 8, and customers will have a single source for all their truck and service needs. "

The Bullet is powered by an EPA-'07-compliant diesel engine found in other Sterling vehicles. The new truck will be available in both regular and quad cab configurations, as well as two-wheel and four-wheel drive.

Sterling Truck is headquartered in Redford, Mich. , and is a subsidiary of Freightliner LLC.

so what motors are they getting?

Most likely the MBE900 since their site has this reference:

"Professional truck users demand an industry-leading product with an engine that's ready to work. The Bullet is powered by an EPA '07-compliant diesel engine found in other Sterling vehicles. The new truck will be available in both regular and quad cab configurations, as well as two-wheel and four-wheel drive. "

Probably the 260hp 6. 4L

As I understand it, the Sterling Bullet is a rebadged Ram 4500/5500. My guess is that it will use the Dodge 6. 7/Aisin drivetrain.

if it's the same truck, the only advantage is service. I remember when the sprinter came out and guys were saying what's the differnce if the grille says Dodge or Freightliner? Some Freightliner dealers are open 24 hours a day some till midnight everyday, parts room included, try and find a dodge dealer open past 5 on a weekday or even open on the weekend. And for the guys who don't want to have a sterling grille, I'm sure you can swap a dodge one in it's place in less than an hour.

I've never driven a Sterling and liked it. The interiors fall apart too easily and the get very rattley. Very uncomfortable driving position for me as well. Pedal layout and steering position was terrible.

Of course this is based on my extensive  use of 1 Sterling truck. :-laf

We have a Dodge dealer a half hour from here (Baldhill Dodge) that has service hours

Mon – Fri 7AM to 10PM

Sat 8AM to 5PM

and if your a vehicle is commercial it goes in the first available bay (Business Link)

As for the motor question I would think it would be a Cummins, the truck looks like a Dodge with a Sterling grille.

I am a free market capitalist that believes that a business should be able to conduct themselves in any legal manner they choose. That being said, it is our sons, daughters, nephews, and fathers that must man these dealerships during all hours of the day and night. Our convienece is not worth the cost to their families to maintain these hours. Most good dealers will make exceptions for customers that can not make it during regular hours. They offer drop off, pick-up and leave parts out in "secret" locations. This helps keep those of us that are busy on the road without sacrificing quality of life for employees.

Baldhill is one of the largest dealerships in this area their service area and parts buildings are huge by NE standards showing their commitment to their customers. They also were the first to offer invoice pricing here in New England.

While I agree with Bryan to an extent, I have worked in the casino industry and understand that if someone does not like their job they can get a nerw one. I am also a firm believer in getting what I pay for. As a small business owner, I need my trucks, the fact that they can offer me two shifts of shop warranty work a day on a vehicle is huge. It basically limits down time to parts procurement.

Yes, and with '06 headlights. :-laf

But is it Cummins powered, or is it DC's chance to bring out their MBE engine into a pickup? Or maybe it's no longer a pickup, as a 4500/5500. (Dodge and Cummins have an exclusivity contract in pickups. )

That would be interesting. If Chrysler is sold, then MB may still have Freightliner/Sterling, so they could still sell the RAM with a MB engine.

And when the 09 RAM comes out, the "old" (today's) style may only be available as a Sterling. Just speculation here.....

I hope that Sterling takes the opportinity to package their version with some of the features that the GMC 4500/5500s have like air-ride cab/suspension and a one piece fiberglass tilt hood.

Was at a Freightliner dealer two weeks ago and one of the managers said that the SPRINTER was GONE from them and going to D. C. dealers. He said Thank Gawd. I asked why the comment. He said parts were a pain and EVERTHING was S. O. and wait. Said he was glad to see them go.

looked at the Sterling intro website last evening to see if it became real yet( pictures, info , etc. ) ,, interesting ,, looked up dealer locations,, sold by Ford dealers mostly,, one independent ,at least in my zip code area,( No. Va/D. C )
