Journey through a jet engine

The door between my garage and home sticks all the time. It is the vinyl gasket/seal on the side where the knob/latch is that makes it stick. The door is metal and painted. It's not the fit of the door that is a problem, but rather the vinyl weather seal that wants to stick to the paint. Rubbing a bit of WD40 on the edge of the door makes it open & close like a charm but I suspect that by doing this I've made the situation worse in that the paint on the door edge gets stickier once the WD40 soaks into the paint surface. This solution only lasts a day or so and then it is stickier than before. My 5yr old has to throw her whole weight against it to get it to open.

Any suggestions on what to put on it that will last and not soften the paint like the WD40 does?

I'd find a way to clean the WD40 off and get some good quality Silicone Spray lube. Make sure you get the stuff that doesn't eat the paint. Spray the seal and let it sit for 30 seconds or so.

It's worked for me on my car doors.

Is it a magnetic seal? If not and it's not hitting the jamb, you might have to repaint it with maybe an automitive paint that dries hard. I suspect it was painted with regular interior paint. Or else could you put on a 1/2" wide strip of clear tape on the edge of the door where the seal hits so it hits that instead of the paint?

It is a vinyl seal on the door jamb that seals against the edge of the door right about in the middle of the edge when the door is fully closed. The paint is regular old indoor/outdoor paint. Ive been putting the lube on the edge of the door with a rag to get it to open easily. WD40 and one other spray lube that was advertised as silicone lube is what I've tried. Can't remember the name of the 2nd one now. Maybe the trick is to put the slickery stuff on the door seal rather than the painted door edge. I'll try some vaseline on the seal when I get home. Not sure if the kids will get it all over them though. I'll have to experiment and find the least amount that makes it work easier.

The clear tape is also a good idea. I might try this to see if a smooth, dry surface works well against the vinyl seal. I suspect it would work a lot better.

Some hard drying paint would probaby fix it for sure. Might try some varnish on the edge over the paint and see if that is dry and non-sticky enough to do the trick.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

You may also want to just get a cheap dehumidifier for in the garage to keep everything from sweeling up when it gets humid.
