My gear shifter on 93 1Ton NuVenture has become real stiff. Pumped the old fluid out the cluth slave cylinder, find a sizeable tear on the rubber insert inside reservoir cover . No place i checked sells cover separatly and is having no luck with the junk yards.

Is that tear my problem and where can i find a cover. I checked everywhere including the Dealers.

LRose,

The tear in the boot will allow the DOT 3 to be in direct contact with atmosphere via the vent hole in the cap. I could check your MC part number and probably find a boot laying around and mail it to you, free. The DOT 3 attracts moisture in the air and can allow corrosion to occur on springs inside the MC and SC, not good. Contamination in the DOT 3 of clutch or breake systems is not good, can allow rust and lowers boiling point of the fluid.

You need to separate the two actions.

1. Clutch pedal effort. Engine off, press pedal down and let it come up, repeat. Does it feel normal?

2. Shifter effort. Engine off, press clutch pedal to the floor, try to row all gears, shifter effort normal?

We have seen once or twice already where the unsuspecting fills the clutch reservoir with the black boot still in place, fills it with DOT 3, never makes it to the system.

Good luck.

I sent an entire remote reservoir, boot and cap via US Mail this AM. Hope this takes care of the problem.

I was thinking if this part is available in the aftermarket and the only place that came to mind might be in the HELPS section at your local auto parts store. The HELPS clutch section just might have the boot, but not sure.

Mr Croyle,

THANK YOU. I got that slave cylinder cover you sent in the mail today. I still cant believe the Dealer/after market dont sell it. Someone told me a few days ago to put a regular rubber seal in that cover . I did and it improves my shifting 80%. I noticed yours is smaller than the original but i dont think its matter. I get around it soon.

Thanks again Good Samaritan.

LRose,

Glad that helped.

the only place that might have anything like this is in the HELPS (I think it is Dorman) section at many auto parts stores. I have seen some really unique hard to find items within their broad range of hard to find low volume items.

If you have any doubt about the "quality" of the DOT 3 in you system, please consider flushing all of it out and starting over with fresh DOT 3. I'm seeing the results of moisture contaminated DOT 3 in some used product that I have inspected. It can start rust on steel parts like springs and cause debris to possibly lodge between the check valve and seat or cause wear as an abrasive on the piston seals.

Good luck.
