I made a trip to Anchorage, Ak this weekend and when I got back, my truck wasn't sounding right. No turbo whistle? Had a little snow on Friday through the mountains so I thought I'd check the air filter first. Sucked into the hose! How in the heck does this happen? I know I've been reading alot about how restrictive the stock air box is so its no surprise when I found it. The question is: Should I mod the factory airbox or Buy a new aftermarket for the truck? Thanks! P. S. I bought a new element at the Dodge dealer last night and drove 9 miles home and the filter minder was already pegged? Stock truck for now.

Do what a lot of folks have done on here... ... Get an Amsoil Nanofiber drop in (that alone will help a lot... allows great flow w/o losing filtration). A number of people have also put a hole in the bottom of the air box and attached a piece of tubing to it. That will also help get a lot more air in the box.

I jigsawed a hole in the bottom of my box yesterday and installed a rubber type of ring that has a 3 inch round hole and it looks/works great. Now, as soon as my aluminum intake tube comes in I'll replace the stock center section of intake tube with a straight through design.

Here's a thread here on TDR about an air filter box mod: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174968&highlight=filter+minder

If it sucked up the filter the box isn't restricted, the filter was plugged.

The filter was sucked into the hose and it was pretty clean. The truck rolled over 5000 miles this weekend. ???????? There was a little water in the airbox but not nearly enough to cause this issue. Think I'll mod the box first and see what happens.

You said you drove to Alaska. Some have reported their stock airbox getting plugged with snow. Maybe there was enough snow being pulled against the filter to cause it to get sucked up. It probably wouldn't take much snow to do that & when it melted, the result would be just a little water.

Just a thought.

A little water in a filter plugs it up real quick (besides weakening it). If you had water in the air box I'd suspect the filter got wet.

Maybe it got wet and froze... trying to suck ice through your system probably doesn't work very well! :{

More than likely iced up. I have had a few filters plug up on me pretty bad this winter. Just the blowing snow gets sucked up and before you know it you are right plugged.
