Hi Bob
I knew there was a reason I am a pack-rat. I changed to Banks about 7 years ago and still have the original down pipe and it looks to be in good condition. It's yours if you want it. All you need to do is to pay for shipping. Just email me and we can figure out the details.

When I went to the Banks Stinger exhaust system on my early '91, I was somewhat concerned that while the new stuff was improved from the muffler on back, they relied upon the same old ORIGINAL downpipe TO that new muffler. Seemed sorta strange to be eliminating all that nasty "restriction" in the REST of the system, while still retaining the "restrictions" in the twists and turns of the ORIGINAL downpipe - especially when their advertisements clearly showed NEW downpipes used in systems supplied for OTHER brand trucks! I felt I had been discriminated against... After all, a "system" is no better than its weakest link - and that would SEEM to be the stock downpipe!

Called them up, and they ASSURED me that there was no NEED for an improved downpipe for the Stinger system as sold for my truck - and they didn't even have one available to sell, so I dropped the subject.

STILL, it seems as tho' one of the FIRST items modified in all OTHER turbo systems IS the downpipe - so I still wonder if MY truck has more power available by going to a larger downpipe - or at LEAST one with fewer restrictions in its non-mandrel bent construction, like the REST of exhaust system!

Comments?

Gary: Banks DOES make a downpipe but they don't sell it as part of the exhaust system unless you get their turbo unit. Their downpipe is 1 1/2" shorter on the top end(at turbo)than our stock downpipe and won't work with stock turbo. The 14cm2 wastegated turbo is 1 1/2" longer than stock 18cm2 turbo so you need a shorter pipe. You could probably use the original downpipe with a longer turbo but it would be an awfully tight fit between turbo and firewall. Banks get $125. 00 for the downpipe.

Anyone else have an extra down pipe in good condition lying around that they don't want?

Gary,
If you have the 2wd, I don't see too much problem with the downpipe. Maybe its my year of rig, but the 3" pipe has smooth bends down and pretty much straight back with very shallow angle bends around the transmission. Unless I was pumping out 300 Hp and up, the 3" should suffice I would think. . #ad

ACTUALLY, my post was somewhat misleading - I forgot that the pipe from turbo outlet to the muffler inlet is TWO pieces - and it's the section BETWEEN the downpipe and muffler that seems greatly of the SAME construction limitations and several bends with corresponding restrictions that comprised the sections AFTER the muffler that the Banks stuff replaced. On the one hand, the turbo outlet itself would seem to be a basic limitation in exhaust flow to a great degree, but at the same time, permitting maximum latent hot gas expansion as SOON after the turbo is what most turbocharging gurus usually focus upon for maximum efficiency and power gains - and is at least one reason FOR increasing downpipe size, REGARDLESS of the size of the actual turbo outlet size itself.

How MUCH potential additional power might be available with better plumbing between the turbo and Banks muffler/system? I don't have a clue - wish I did!

As the Banks guys and a few here have suggested, it might not be much - but then, I frequently see performance enhancement items only promising 5-8 hp selling for several hundred bucks, so to SOME, every little bit counts... #ad
