Okay I searched before posting this so sorry if it is posted elsewhere and I didn't see it.

Over the past week we have had much snow and ice, while pushing some snow I got hung up in a driveway. This is not normal because I have only gotten this truck hung up twice in 6 years. While trying to get out I noticed that the driver side rear wheel was spinning but the passenger side was not. Funny because I have the stock posi unit in and my understanding of this unit is it uses "torsen" type locking? or gears if you will. So I was wondering why only one wheel was spinning? After I got out I popped the throttle a couple times and both were spinning and seemed to be working properly. Is this normal or should I start looking to purchase a Eaton unit?

Thanks!!!!

A torsen unit needs some load on each wheel to engage properly. On ice most people apply a little brake to get things going.

I noticed the same thing in my '03 today. It has the Amer. Axle 3. 73 no-spin. In the past I have always been able to get both wheels to spin from a dead stop without applying any brake pressure. Today I even tried applying the brakes and it still did not work. The only time both wheels spun is when both were on ice. What's the point of posi if the wheel with traction doesn't get power?? As soon as we stop getting these weekly storms I'm going to pull the cover. I don't hear any noise so I don't think there's a metal failure of any kind. I'm guessing those spiral gears/braking mechanisms are worn out. I've got to say; between injector failure @ 65K (yes, I change the filter regularly and with a good quality filter), steering box failure @ 50K, high pressure pump failure @11K, front axle u-joint and front driveshaft u-joint failure @ 60K I'm very disappointed in this truck. There are days I'm tempted to buy my old rattley '91 back. Just basic maintenance up to 100K!

If one wheel has virtually no traction the torque biaing differential will let the tractionless wheel just spin. I just put a little restiance by lightly setting the emergency brake and both wheels will take off!

okay thanks for the info I'll try that next time. I did put my coat under the one spinning but didn't kick the right side in. I may go buy a locker for the front this spring.

Thanks again!!
